Patchouli is usually associated with fragrance. Its deep, earthy character makes it a familiar base note and fixative in perfumery. But there is more to patchouli oil than its aroma. Recently, researchers have been looking at its potential for other applications, including skincare.
What does the research show?
A 2026 study looked at patchouli essential oil against two bacteria commonly found on acne-prone skin: Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. In laboratory testing, the oil showed antibacterial activity against both. The researchers also looked at inflammation using cell models. They found changes in several inflammatory markers, including TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6.
This is interesting because acne is not only about bacteria. Inflammation is also part of the process. So, seeing antibacterial activity alongside an effect on inflammatory markers gives researchers another reason to investigate patchouli oil for skincare.
But there is a difference between an interesting laboratory result and a proven skincare application. The study does not show that patchouli oil can treat acne. It also does not mean that every patchouli oil will produce the same result.
Not all patchouli oils are the same
This part is easy to overlook. Patchouli oil is a natural material, and its chemical composition can vary. The origin of the plant, harvesting conditions, raw material and distillation process can all influence the final oil. That means two patchouli oils can have different chemical profiles, even though both are simply labelled “patchouli oil”.
For formulators, this makes the raw material itself worth paying attention to. A CoA can provide useful information about a particular batch, such as patchouli alcohol, refractive index, specific gravity, optical rotation and colour. Of course, a CoA cannot tell you whether an oil will work in an acne formulation. That still needs proper formulation and testing. But it can tell you what you are actually working with.
So, is patchouli an acne ingredient?
We don’t think the research is enough to answer that yet. A better question might be what a particular patchouli oil can bring to a formulation, and whether the available research gives enough reason to investigate it further. There is still a lot to learn about how patchouli oil behaves in different formulations, concentrations and applications.
For an ingredient that has been known mainly for its role in perfumery, though, it is interesting to see researchers looking at it from a different angle.
